Description

Opium Tincture, USP (Deodorized) is for oral administration and is a clear, reddish-brown hydroalcoholic solution with a characteristic odor and bitter taste.

Opium Tincture works by decreasing muscle contractions, which helps to reduce diarrhea. Clinical evidence indicates that the analgesic activity of opium preparations is due to their morphine content. It results in a decrease in digestive secretions, an increase in gastrointestinal (GI) muscle tone, and therefore a reduction in GI propulsion. Relatively small doses that do not produce significant pain relief (analgesia) are effective in controlling diarrhea.

Indication

Opium Tincture is used for the treatment of diarrhea.

Side Effects

This preparation is not recommended for use in children and should be used with caution in the elderly. Addiction can result from opium usage. Opium should be given in smallest effective doses and as infrequently as possible to minimize physical dependence. Constipation, nausea, and vomiting may occur in some patients. Pruritus (itching) and urticaria (hives) have been observed.
